Edinburgh in August is like nowhere else on earth. The city transforms — every pub, church hall, and spare room becomes a venue, the streets fill with performers and crowds, and the energy is absolutely electric. But for visitors trying to get from A to B, it can also be a bit of a maze if you're not prepared.
This week the Fringe and International Festival are in full swing, and with them come a series of planned road closures, diverted buses, and some genuinely useful alternatives that most tourists never find out about.
Whether you're flying in, walking the Royal Mile, or trying to reach a venue across town, here's everything you need to know about getting around Edinburgh this festival season — including some brilliant cycle routes that most visitors completely miss.

Road Closures: Summertime Streets 2026
The council's Summertime Streets programme closes several city centre roads to vehicles during the festival period.
The Big Closures This Week
High Street, Parliament Square, Cockburn Street and St Giles' Street are closed to vehicles 10:30am–midnight weekdays, 10:30am–9pm weekends, from 7–30 August.
Princes Street and George Street Changes
There's also a partial closure on Princes Street due to a recent building fire, which is affecting bus routes. George Street is being kept open for diverted buses, and some Fringe venues have been relocated to St Andrew Square.
Businesses Affected by the Fire and Tram Closure
The Princes Street fire and the resulting tram closure (trams currently run only between the airport and West End) have disrupted access to several businesses in the city centre. Some restaurants and shops have had reduced footfall or changed their opening hours.
If guests tried to book a table and couldn't get a reservation, it's worth checking again — many venues are reopening or adjusting their hours as the situation evolves, and some that were fully booked may now have availability due to the reduced footfall in that stretch of town.
Cowgate and Lawnmarket Restrictions
Cowgate is closed to vehicles (except cycles) from 3pm to 5am daily. Lawnmarket becomes a pedestrian and cycle-only zone during Tattoo performances.
Getting To and From the Airport
Edinburgh Airport is expecting its busiest week, with peak demand from 9 August. The tram runs every 7 minutes between the airport and West End, and all-night trams run on Friday and Saturday nights throughout the festivals.

Trams are currently running between Edinburgh Airport and West End only. During August, bikes are not permitted on trams. Check timetables before you travel.

Share this post with your guests before they arrive. Tell them to download the Edinburgh Trams app, plan their cycle route in advance, and expect the city centre to be busy after 5pm when Tattoo closures kick in. If they couldn't get a restaurant booking, tell them to check again — the fire and tram closures have changed the usual booking patterns in the centre.
