It's traditional on April 6th, Tartan Day in the US, to read the Declaration of Arbroath. Historians credit this missive from 1320 as influential for the American Declaration of Independence.

The Declaration of Arbroath was a groundbreaking document that redefined the state, outlining a new relationship between a monarch and the people.

When Brian Cox (pictured in Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza, near the UN) read the declaration, it was a small event with only a few attendees. Now it draws big crowds (book here). In NY it is now hosted in Bryant Park on Avenue of the Americas.

Join me in Edinburgh as I read the declaration in a low-key lunch and learn at The Peg Gallery, just off the historic Royal Mile.
